Yes, I had a great weekend catching up with some footy heroes of mine from 40 years ago.

Winning the Goulburn Valley League thirds premiership that year when I was lucky enough to be coach, against all the odds, still remains firmly at the top of my lengthy list of personal sporting highlights over nearly eight decades.
To get 19 of the 22 players from that side to travel from all over Australia for a reunion after so many years emphasised the respect they have for each other and was the reason in my humble opinion for what they achieved on that late September Sunday in 1983.
AFL great and now media star Garry Lyon, who was in that team that defied the remarkable odds, showed how close the group was after all those years by attending the reunion on Saturday and declaring ‘‘no way would I have missed it’’ despite his busy media commitments.
Milestones for pair
Former Kyabram netballers Lauren Jones (Pryde) and Stephanie Vick (O’Nial) have reached the 250 GVL A-grade netball game milestone.
Both Jones and Vick played a lot of games at Kyabram and are now well respected players at Echuca Football Netball Club.
Jones played her 250th game in late July and Vick played her big game last weekend.
Both girls are fantastic netballers and contributed a lot to our club in the past. Congratulations on reaching this milestone achievement.
Mueller in Team of Year
Kyabram Cricket Club’s run-making machine Kyle Mueller has been named in the Victorian Country Cricket League’s Team of the Year for the 2022-23 season.
The Kyabram Cricket Club skipper had a stellar season, highlighted by 646 runs at an average of more than 100 in the Cricket Shepparton competition.
Mueller was the only Cricket Shepparton player to make the team and one of only two Northern Rivers region players to be selected.
The other is star Cobram Cricket Club allrounder Adam Decicco.
It is the first time Mueller has made the elite team.
Another Ryan star
Tatura’s Ryan clan has produced some good footballers down the years and the latest talent could be the pick of them.
Jakob Ryan, who debuted for Collingwood in last Friday night’s clash against the Brisbane Lions, is the son of Tatura former spectacular goalkicker Steve Ryan and a grandson of ‘Bones’ Ryan, both residents of Adelaide with their families these days.
Jakob Ryan was picked up by Collingwood at number 28 in last year’s national draft.
He has been starring with Collingwood in the VFL competition as an 189cm intercepting defender and plays with a lot of passion and energy.
Unfortunately, he suffered concussion in his debut game and had to subbed off but he has plenty of time on his hands to make his mark at the highest level.
Watson’s ‘happy Friday’
Kyabram trots trainer Mark Watson was happy with his day’s work at the Wagga meeting last Friday.
A win and a second place were the result of two pacers he lined up at the meeting and both were driven by Shepparton’s gun reinsman Nathan Jack.
Watson’s winner was Half Price Bride who was favourite and just hung on to get the money with a PB best mile rate of 1.55.6 to post his second win in eight career starts.
Watson had earlier produced Ive An Idea for his sixth race start and he finished second to the hot favourite Snakeskin.
Amos’ appreciation
Campaspe Shire Mayor Rob Amos has returned to his roots by tackling the hurdles at Kyabram Little Athletics Club.
Cr Amos said he was thrilled to be at the club after Campaspe Shire Council had provided a grant to the club for the purchase the new hurdles.
“It brings me immense joy to witness the positive impact the council’s grants have on local sporting clubs across the shire,’’ he said.
“Investing in our community’s future through sports and recreation is a top priority, and it was great to see the club’s progress firsthand.
Cr Amos thanked club officials and volunteers for their commitment to nurturing young athletes and fostering a strong community spirit.
