Thirty-nine aspiring golfers, with ages ranging from 12 to 70-plus, guided by a PGA professional, and supported by community instructors and mentors, have spent three weeks acquiring the basic skills of golf.
Thirty-five have now taken up the next stage of the program — six weeks of hitting the fairways to develop their skills and knowledge of the game.
Players are accompanied by volunteer mentors who gradually introduce them to basic rules and etiquette so they feel confident to practise on their own, have a social game with friends or family, or progress to competition play when they feel ready.
The emphasis is on physical and mental health and wellbeing, socialising and most importantly, having fun.
To ensure everyone can participate, some sessions have been scheduled outside school and standard business hours, and the club is supplying all necessary equipment.
Golfers are also given vouchers for the driving range and free access to the golf course for the whole of the program.
Get Into Golf has been funded by a Change Our Game grant from the Victorian Government, funding from Golf Australia, and substantial cash and in-kind support from Benalla Golf Club.
Don’t worry if you missed the current program as Benalla Golf Club will be offering it again early in 2023.
