Centuries tumbled like boulders down a mountain throughout the lower-grade cricket ranks at the weekend as Cricket Shepparton’s veteran batters enjoyed long stints at the crease.
News photographer Rechelle Zammit was behind the lens for the S J Perry Shield encounter between Central Park-St Brendan’s and Murchison at Central Park Recreation Reserve — the host won by three wickets.
It was an E(asy)-grade victory for Nagambie
Northerners players' hearts were swiftly broken on Saturday.
After winning the toss and electing to bowl at their home deck, Northerners would have held high hopes for their chances against Nagambie in the E-grade competition.
However, two of the Lakers' batters were locked in early.
Nagambie lost its first wicket after 9.1 overs at 1- 32, but wouldn’t lose another wicket for a further 170 runs as Trent Gladwin and Jason Snelling combined for quick-fire tons.
Gladwin struck 101 runs off 91 balls in an innings that included 13 boundaries, while Snelling was even more attacking as he blasted 17 boundaries and two sixes on his way to 106 from 83 balls.
The Lakers finished their 40 overs on a tall tally of 6-271.
Northerners crumbled under the weight of the mammoth target as the hosts were bowled out for 73 in 23.4 overs — Gladwin also contributed 3-26 from six overs.
B-grade veterans secure 112-run synchronicity
Two former A-grade guns have turned back the clock to their glory days.
Numurkah veteran Jahlan Lau hit 112 runs from 141 balls in round 10 the weekend prior, before another former Cricket Shepparton A-grade star struck the same total on Saturday.
Mooroopna’s Simon D’Elia produced a stunning effort with the bat against Karramomus in a successful run chase for his side.
Coming in at number four, D’Elia finished on 112 not out from 163 balls in an innings that included 14 boundaries.
The veteran batter guided his side past Karramomus’ first innings total of 206 in 62.4 overs in an important victory for Mooroopna as the club looks to secure a spot in the B-grade two-day finals series.
Pine Lodge can’t avoid Jake's bake
Undera is sitting pretty on top of the Jim McGregor Shield ladder.
The Lions’ lead over second-placed Mooroopna is partly thanks to the efforts of their first-change bowler Jake Dryden on Saturday.
Dryden didn’t leave a dry eye among his opponent Pine Lodge as he ripped through its C-grade batting line-up in the second innings.
Having secured a first innings total of 6-193 after its 40 overs, Undera took to the field against last-placed Pine Lodge at Undera Park Recreation Reserve.
Dryden — who was full of confidence after scoring a tidy 28 not out that day — came into bowl and began tearing the Lodgers to shreds.
The bowling all-rounder finished with season-high figures of 6-45 as the Lodgers were bowled out for 108.
Karra as happy as a kid with a puppy thanks to Guppy
A guppy might be a small fish in the animal kingdom, but on a C-grade wicket, a Guppy is a batting maestro.
Karramomus’ Travis Guppy has been on a heater this summer and leads the C-grade competition on 520 runs — 219 ahead of next best Undera’s Bayden Bailey.
Guppy’s dominance with the bat continued on Saturday as he blasted 127 not out from 89 balls against Invergordon in round 11.
Batting second, Karramomus was incredibly able to chase down the Hawks’ first innings total of 195 without losing a single wicket as openers Guppy and Toby Keady (55 not out runs off 67 balls) dominated the match.
Guppy’s innings was his second-highest total for the 2024-25 season — 10 runs behind his 137 against Pine Lodge — and included 17 boundaries and three sixes in an impressive display.
