Shepparton Youth Club United has kick-started 2025 with a thrilling victory over Rochester in the Goulburn Murray Cricket senior Women’s T20 competition.
The visitor won the toss and elected to field in the round 11 fixture.
Opening batter Sophie Ullah carried her bat through United’s innings, finishing on 25 not out from 31 balls to star for the home side.
Ullah struck two boundaries in her unbeaten dig.
The star of the first innings was Rochester’s Rebecca Wade who collected four wickets and a run-out as she proved herself as United’s biggest threat with the ball.
Wade finished with figures of 4-8 from 3.2 overs.
United ended its innings on 9-83 after the 20 overs had concluded.
Rochester’s trio of Cadence Major (19 runs off 23 balls), Sadie Martin (15 off 27) and Miranda Crawford (20 off 30) gave the visitor a good platform to launch its run chase.
However, United soon fixed its line and length and the match tightened in the late stages.
United bowlers Mel Saunders (1-9 from four overs) and Rebecca Laino (1-11 from four) were the best with the Kookaburra for the host.
With one over remaining, Rochester sat on 5-77 requiring seven runs from the final six balls to secure the win.
Ullah was given the responsibility with the ball and didn’t let her side down, restricting Rochester to four runs and taking a wicket in the process.
Rochester's final total of 6-81 finished two runs short of United’s effort.
In other game, Katamatite secured a confidence-building victory over Kyabram.
The Tigers restricted the Redbacks to 9-63, before chasing down the target in 14.3 overs.
Ladder-leader Mooroopna claimed a commanding 34-run victory over Bamawm-Lockington United at home.
Echuca defeated Cooma by 83 runs at Victoria Park, while Moama got the better of Nathalia to the tune of 29 runs.
Nagambie had the bye.
Mooroopna (first), Nagambie (second) and SYCU (third) make up the top three positions on the ladder after 10 matches.
Four rounds remain in the competition before finals begin on February 23.
