Saturday Sundries are all the extra highlights from the weekend’s lower grade cricket — from the top run-scorer to the best bowling figures and anything else of interest from across the district’s grounds.
To make sure we don’t miss any classic moments, why not message Shepparton News sport on social media or email us at sport@sheppnews.com.au
This week, we pulled apart the lower grade layers to feature absurd bowling spells, crazy batting cameos and a bit of old-fashioned teamwork from Saturday’s action.
News photographer Megan Fisher was behind the lens for the B-grade contest between Old Students and Katandra.
Remembering a giant of the GV
We start Saturday Sundries this week on a sad note.
Cricket Shepparton and the Goulburn Valley sporting scene has lost a much-loved figure with the recent death of Frank Scott.
A Central Park-St Brendan’s life member, Frank was a long-time contributor and volunteer at the club.
His involvement in cricket circles is highlighted by his role as trainer-manager for Bendigo and Melbourne Country Week carnivals.
A minute’s silence was observed prior to the commencement of Cricket Shepparton matches on Saturday as the association paid tribute to Frank’s legacy.
His passion for sport in the GV extended to football, where he was a regular face at Shepparton United as head trainer and as an administrator at various clubs.
His commitment and dedication to the craft saw him take up the head trainer position for the Goulburn Valley League, a spot he held for more than 20 years and his contribution resulted in life membership.
Frank, along with his wife Lucy, were inducted onto the Greater Shepparton City Council Sports Hall of Fame as members of the honour roll.
The sports team at The News extends its sincere condolences to Lucy and the Scott family on their loss.
Vale Frank Scott.
Nervous 90s
Ask any cricketer and they will tell you the 10 runs between 90 and 99 are some of the hardest to score.
Just ask Michael Van Dorsser.
The Mooroopna opener had his dreams of notching a second century of the Cricket Shepparton season dashed on Saturday.
Four runs away from the magical triple figures, Van Dorsser was dismissed caught and bowled by Flynn O’Brien.
His 96-run effort came off 101 deliveries and consisted of nine boundaries and three tonks over the fence.
Despite missing out on another century, Van Dorsser has now chalked up 407 runs at an average of 67.83 this summer.
If his recent form is any indication, Van Dorsser may get another crack at navigating the nervous 90s.
Tigers escape jungle
Talk about a barnburner.
Central Park-St Brendan’s entered the round nine clash against Karramomus as clear favourite, however, a gutsy and brave performance from the Bloods almost had the visitors steal victory.
The Bloods won the toss and batted first at Central Park where they posted 129 from 40.5 overs.
Captain Jack Hooper was the pick of the bowlers with impressive figures of 4-7, while Haris Hassan chipped in with 3-19.
It should have been a routine run chase against a side with one win to its name, however, the Tigers found themselves in disarray at 4-41.
Ethan Beck (29 runs) steadied things, but more carnage followed and the hosts were soon 9-106 with 24 runs left to win.
It was a nervous watch for those in the sheds as Hassan (16 not out) and John Kealey (four) chased down the remaining runs to pencil in a memorable one-wicket win.
Not sad with these figures
Pine Lodge talent Darshana Prasad was player of the match in his side’s five-wicket win over Tatura on Saturday.
After winning the toss and batting, Tatura navigated a poor start to reach 2-130.
The host was on track to pass 200 at Tatura Park, however, Prasad had other ideas.
The Pine Lodge bowler claimed the vital wicket of Rajvir Singh (73 runs) before he rolled through Tatura’s lower order to finish with 5-23 off nine overs as the host reached 9-170.
The visitor chased down the total inside 35 overs and it was Prasad (nine runs) who was unbeaten alongside Lachlan Ludeman (70 not out) at the end.
