There was some mighty gear-ripping and tyre-spinning going down Mt Major on Saturday.

The third round of the 2024-25 Victorian Downhill Series was held at Dookie at the weekend, with gun mountain bike riders from under-15 and above stomping jumps and dabbing corners.
The region’s — and beyond — downhill riders enjoyed the clear blue skies and made the most of the fine weather while making sure to roost the trails.
Plenty of gravity-defying jumps and bone-rattling runs made up a cracking day of downhill mountain bike riding.
Goulburn Valley Mountain Bike Club committee member Jo Jeffers said the event was a major success for the recently re-established club.
“I think they ended up with about 260 entries (for the event),” Jeffers said.
“The idea for the Vic Downhill Series is that it is hosted around the state between different mountain bike clubs and each club gets all the profit from it — Vic Downhill take about 10 per cent.
“As a club, we did really well out of it and we hosted the canteen too.”
The event had 15 different categories that participants could compete in, with four of the sections being juniors.
Jeffers said despite the fact the Goulburn Valley only had juniors competing at the event, the native riders still made their mark.
“In the under-15s, we had one of our boys, Sonny Brassil, take out first place,” she said.
“Eliot Bye took fourth and Luke Calvert took fifth, so out of the top five we had three of our boys right up there.
“We had a couple more in under-17s who finished midfield."
The risk of injury in such a high-octane sport is always present and, although, according to Jeffers, there were some “gnarly stacks”, there were no serious injuries.
As the club looks to the future, Jeffers said it had bold ideas to help expand the growth of cycling sports in the region.
“We have big plans to host things (at Mt Major),” she said.
“(We want) to establish some nice and easy flow trails out there, develop a jumps park down the bottom.
“Few cross-country trails in there that need a bit of work, really open it up to other riders that aren’t just downhill focused.”
Victorian Downhill Series’ next event will be held at Mt Beauty on February 1-2.
