Round 12 of the Allan Matheson Shield took place on a scorching Saturday afternoon, with the mind-numbing heat providing some thought-provoking results.
While making the 45-minute commute from Tallygaroopna to Euroa, Tally’s players would have been confident of adding to their unbeaten 2024-25 record in the Division One competition.
Euroa had a record of 2-8-1 heading into the match and sat tied last on wins at the bottom of the ladder, while Tallygaroopna — the powerhouse of the competition — was flying in first place with a record of 10-0-1.
In this David and Goliath battle, it was David who delivered the first blow as Euroa dominated the first rink 27-10 at Euroa Bowls Club.
Knowing Tallygaroopna would come back with a vengeance in the second rink, Euroa skipper Peter Naughton bravely led his charges to another victory, securing the second rink 21-18.
Tally fought back and won the third rink 16-18 before achieving another tight victory in the last rink (16-19), but it was too little, too late as Euroa delivered arguably the upset victory of the Allan Matheson Shield season.
The hosts won the match 14-80 to 4-65.
In other round 12 fixtures, Tatura-Hill Top kept in touch with the top four after defeating Mooroopna at home.
Tatura secured the win early as it won the opening three rinks convincingly before the visitors claimed the last 22-28.
The hosts won the match 16-105 to 2-73.
Second-placed Shepparton Golf continued its impressive season by defeating fourth-placed Kyabram 14-80 to 4-72.
The loss for Kyabram means it now sits dangerously close to missing out on finals as Tatura-Hill Top lurks one victory behind in fifth place.
Shepparton Park secured a dominant win over East Shepparton away from home.
Park won the match 2-62 to 16-80.
Two rounds remain in the Allan Matheson Shield home-and-away season before finals begin.
