A 94th-minute winner courtesy of Werribee City’s Adam Oddo has consigned the Goulburn Valley Suns to yet another NPL2 defeat, with alarm bells now well and truly sounding at McEwen Reserve.

City snapped a nine-game losing streak with its 1-0 win over the Suns; the three points critical to the side’s efforts in remaining clear of relegation contention.

As for the Suns, a devastating defeat means the fight for survival becomes that much harder.

The men in orange were unfortunate not go in front early on Saturday, with no-one able to capitalise on a tantalising Jamie Hamilton cross which flashed across the face in the opening 10 minutes.

The hosts’ defence was tested on a number of occasions in the first half; City danger man Nemanja Spasojevic causing headaches for Suns centre backs Sean Pye and Kevin McEvoy, who were fortunate to enter the break on level terms.

Suns coach Craig Carley went to his bench early in the second half, bringing young gun Alex Caldow into the mix, with Suns’ youth products Stefan Pigatto and Harun Aktas also gifted precious first team football in the second term.

A scrappy second half looked to be ending in a disappointing stalemate, but a scintillating City counter attack in the shadows of extra time would shatter all hope of the Suns salvaging anything from the do-or-die clash.

City’s Oddo slotted home after going one-on-one with keeper Lucas Enders, handing the Suns their 11th defeat of the campaign.

The fight for survival does not get any easier for the Suns, who face a fifth-placed Pascoe Vale outfit this weekend.
