Veteran Kyabram journalist Gus Underwood has been around the region’s sporting scene for nearly 70 years and in that time has read about and witnessed some incredible, uncanny and sometimes almost unbelievable individual sporting feats.

Underwood has decided to recount some of these more bizarre performances and what he deems are the ones which stand out in the memory bank the most.
His ‘Freakish Sporting Feats’ are must-read content for any local sporting fan and will feature in the sports sections of McPherson Media Group publications each week throughout February, March and April.
There has barely been a piece of Goulburn or Murray Valley sporting news over the past six decades which has not passed through the hands of Underwood, but if your favourite ‘Freakish Sporting Feat’ doesn’t make his list, make sure you email it to sport@sheppnews.com.au for its chance to be featured in the wash-up after the series among the ‘best reader suggestions’.
There have been some incredible goal kicking feats in my time but topping my list for the best individual feat was Katandra full forward Ted Wright almost 100 years ago.
In 1925 Katamatite kicked a lazy 78.19 (487) to defeat an undermanned Wattsville (east of Benalla) side 1.3 (9) at Katamatite in the Katandra Football League.
Wright kicked 42 goals - yes 42 - of those Katamatite goals.
