After the first day’s play of the penultimate home-and-away round on Saturday, February 1, The Flames remain in the race and their chances now rest with their bowlers.
On Saturday, the bowlers will try and defend a first innings score of 8-186 this Saturday against reigning premier Echuca.
Echuca has wiped 26 off its run chase but at the cost of two wickets, so the final result is still delicately poised.
The youthful Brigade side had plenty of contributors with the bat with Kaine Herbert’s 35 the topping the list.
Openers Miller Griffiths (24) and Tim Nelson, Bohden Learmonth, Shannon Fleming and Shaun Doolan all with 20, also made valuable contributions to the score.
Echuca used eight bowlers, with Kale Edwards, who took 3-40 off 13 overs, the most productive.
Strike bowlers Rob Salter and Jackson Barnett each took a vital wicket late in the day when Echuca’s innings started with opening bat Brendan Moyle looking dangerous and resumes his innings on 20 not out.
X Rochester took a big step in its plan to play finals by restricting second-placed Moama to 104 off 52 overs and taking first innings honours in the clash at Rochester.
Moama won the toss and batted first but found runs hard to come by against the home team, led by a rampant Adam Ward, who finished with 5-32 off 25 overs.
He was well supported by Sean Williams with 4-31 off 16 overs.
Matt Saunders top scored with 22 in a sorry Moama scoreline.
Rochester reached Moama’s score in 25 overs for the loss of five wickets with Dylan Cuttriss with 44 off 47 balls and Kuldeep Lal with 31 producing the stand which secured first innings points for their side.
In the remaining clash, which has no bearing on the finals, Tongala restricted Leitchville-Gunbower to 90 off 43.4 overs.
A brilliant spell of bowling from paceman Adam Nunn saw him take 5-23 off 11 overs.
Tongala made heavy work of the run chase, battling to 6-78 off 36 overs and still needing 13 runs to take a first innings lead when the games resume Saturday.
Josh Hawken’s fighting 29 and James Keath with 18 were the top contributors with the bat for Leitchville-Gunbower.
Skipper Alex Williams with 16 and Matt Ohlsen with 18 offered the most resistance of the Tongala batsmen, as Simon Tatt with 4-23 off 15 overs and
James Keath with 2-23 off 16 overs did the most damage with the ball for Leitchville-Gunbower.
