It wasn’t a runaway victory at Echuca Bowls Club, the match finishing 14-54 to 2-45, but the result serves as a strong rebound performance, putting Echuca within arm’s reach of confirming minor premiership status.
Kerry Evans was narrowly the best-performing skip in the contest, leading her Echuca quartet of Di Payne (lead), Michelle Cunnington (second) and Phillip Thorn (third) to a 21-14 win in her rink.
On the other side of the green, Ian Page also scored victory for Echuca, earning a 20-15 win over Stanhope skip Jamie Stokes.
The remaining rink fell the way of Stanhope’s Peter Myers, who skipped his side to success, 16-12, against Echuca counterpart Roma Opie.
Elsewhere, Rich River continued its unlikely late resurgence, stringing together back-to-back wins for the first time this season with a 15-63 to 1-45 result over Deniliquin.
Both sides were coming off upset wins against the top two last week, but it was Rich River that looked far better in the contest, Dennis Demeo’s rink bowling particularly well in a 27-16 result.
Brian Trengove also secured rink points for Rich River, 20-13, while teammate Gary Radford and Deni’s Christine Taylor couldn’t be separated, playing out a 16-all draw.
The final division one game saw Moama take all three rinks against Mathoura, dealing a second straight blow to the Cutters.
Skips Trevor Eastwell (27-14) and Marilyn Stephenson (22-12) both secured double-digit wins in their rinks over Mathoura skips Dennis McHarry and Troy Mansbridge respectively.
Robyn Thomassen completed the sweep with an 18-13 win in the remaining rink.
The result draws Mathoura into a contest with the Steamers for second place, while leader Echuca starts to break away at the top.
