On Wednesday last week, all players were able to play out their sets in daylight under near perfect playing conditions.
Perhaps the lawn courts were a still damp from recent prolonged showers, but some rolling of the courts saved the day.
Playing twilight tennis at the end of a warm day is, well, just delightful.
The Legal Eagles, who have lost all seven previous matches, came out of their shells to record their first win of the season.
The Eagles defeated Mitre 10 by 13 sets and 101 games to Mitre 10 who won 10 sets 109 games.
In the match there were seven sets decided by tie-breaks and the Eagles won all seven.
The Eagles men’s captain Clive Gow said it was an outstanding result.
However, he added, it just goes to show how close the end result was.
If two tie-breaks had gone the way of Mitre 10, then they would have won the match.
The Eagles were led by their four ladies who won eight of the 10 sets they played in, so accounting for more than half of the sets won, while the men were only able to win five of the remaining 13 sets.
Jemma Smith and Bec Elstone were outstanding in turning the sinking ship that was Legal Eagles around.
They both won their three sets.
For Mitre 10, Eric Moore, playing as their number one men’s player, won his three sets.
Eric was even able to win when paired with his father Harley, winning six games to two playing Riley Hamilton and Ben Littmann.
