South put on a show in the first half, entering the break 3-1 up, with a Joel Aitken brace and a Will Keenan goal putting the home side in the box seat.
For the Ibises, Cody Sellwood managed to score two; however, the men in red could not get the job done, as South made its way to the top of the table with a 3-2 win.
South coach Rob Harmeston said it was an incredibly strong start from the Shepparton side.
“I almost had nothing to say at half time, so it was a really positive experience from that perspective,” Harmeston said.
“But then we sort of had a plan in the second half and it didn’t come to fruition and they put us under a bit of pressure, they got a goal and we looked a little bit shaky for a bit there but managed to run out at the end.”
Harmeston said Tatura’s comeback had him worried, with the Shepparton side’s dominance in the first half lost in the second.
“We knew that we had a plan, we said we can just do this and this and we’ll be absolutely fine and we didn’t really follow through with it,” he said.
The win saw South leapfrog Tatura to sit in first position on the ladder; however, Harmeston said being on top mattered most at the end of the season.
“As the old cliché says, it’s one week at a time, and we just need to make sure that we’re doing the right things every week, if we start getting too ahead of ourselves we’ll probably end up on the end of something.”
Glenn Murison was a standout for South on the day, along with Aitken, who was classy in front of goal.
South was not the only Shepparton side to get points over the weekend, with Shepparton United picking up a 3-1 win over Epsom.
United moved into second spot on the ladder after the come-from-behind win, with the side down one goal at half time.
It was a big second half from United, with Ermal Marku scoring in the 55th minute, before a Daniel Pendovski brace saw the side run away with the win.
In the league one women’s competition, Shepparton United suffered a heavy away defeat at the hands of Spring Gully United.
The 6-0 loss was a disappointing result for the side, with the game following an impressive two-goal win in round two.
In the league two women’s competition, Tatura moved into second spot on the ladder, defeating La Trobe University 6-0.
Chelsea Salmon starred for the side, scoring an impressive hat-trick, while single goals to Alaura Leetham and Amanda Posteraro and an own goal rounded out the impressive win.
