The home side won the toss and elected to bat, with Hugh Hyde sweeping in at the top of the order to claim 67 off 54 balls, with four fours. Daniel Ellis followed soon after, making a respectable 16 off 28.
Cobram finished its batting innings with co-coach Lachlan Hyde returning to form after securing 40 runs not-out off 30 balls.
With such a demonstration, the Tigers lost just two wickets to the wiles of the Bloods’ Andrew Lean and Toby Chappell.
The Bloods faced a tough challenge beating the Tigers’ 143, and Joshua Wraight stepped out to the crease at the top of the Bloods’ batting order, making 13 off 26.
Despite a tenacious 28 runs not-out from vice-captain Andrew Lean, the Bloods couldn’t escape formidable bowling from Cobram’s Jeremy Baden (3 for 16 from 4) and young gun Bodey Webb (3 for seven from 4).
The final score saw Cobram finish on 2-143 to Tocumwal’s 9-71.
Tigers co-coach Lachlan Hyde said he was impressed by Webb’s performance.
“It was good for young Bodey to come in and secure his spot, and prove he can play at an A-grade level,” he said.
“Everyone bowled pretty well. The two standouts were Jeremy and Bodey. The way Jeremy bowled at the start was really good, continuing his form from the start of the year.”
Hyde reserved praise for his brother Hugh and Daniel Ellis.
“Hugh batted smartly, and has developed into one of the better batters in the league at the moment,” Hyde said.
“It’s good to see him capitalise on that achievement and get consistent runs.
“We were quite happy with the way we batted, I think. Hugh and Dan got us off to a really good start, and the platform they set allowed Tyrone and I to continue from that.
“Personally, it was good to get some runs again. I sort of missed out the last few games I played.”
Looking ahead to another weekend of two-day cricket against first-placed Deniliquin, Hyde said little would change to his team’s line-up from last week.
“If we bowl or bat first, we’ll hopefully start strong and get the game on our side from the start.
“We’ll be looking to win first and get as many points as we possibly can, so the win first rather than the outright.
“But you can’t take Deni lightly at the moment. They’re the best team in the comp at the moment.
“We’ve got to respect them because they’ve got some of the best batters in the comp at the moment.
“Bennett, Arthur, Hogan, Todd and the Hillier boys all bat really low, all the way down to 11 pretty much.”
