With play on hold due to lockdowns on both sides of the Murray River, the association has pencilled in September 12 as the latest date for the season to recommence.
If action cannot resume by that date then the season will be cancelled.
The association came to the decision after a meeting with its member clubs on Thursday night.
“If we don't play by that weekend then the season will be called off,” Cobram Roar president Paul Bovalina said.
“AWFA have tried to push the season back as much as possible and they have tried to be optimistic with getting it back up and running.”
In a post to Facebook on Friday, league officials said the announcement was made to give some “certainty in uncertain times” to its clubs and players.
Bovalina said the past month had been a challenging time for everyone at Roar.
“It has been a bit of a confusing and uncertain time for everyone. It really is a week-by-week proposition,” he said.
“It's made it really hard for the club, for all of our players, supporters and volunteers.”
The club president said another meeting with the league and the remaining clubs had been scheduled for this Thursday.
