The regatta was originally earmarked for Carrum Beach Port Phillip Bay, but the weather conditions were deemed unsafe for racing on Port Phillip.
The alternative course was scheduled on the Patterson Lakes, sheltered in part from the blustering offshore winds and coastal swells.
The races were reduced in distance to 5.5 km by way of three laps on the Patterson Lakes.
Competition was fierce, with several of the Victorian member clubs of the Southern States Zone competing.
Teams from the Geelong, Kia Opua (Seaholme), Western Beaches (Footscray), Torquay, Patterson Lakes and Inland participated in the weekend race events.
The Inland Outrigger Canoe Club completed the race successfully in the top three places at the Saturday races.
Inland Outrigger Canoe Club Men's OC6 team; Jim Galea, Rauri Coffey, Chris Erardi, Sharky (Mark) Oman, Ken Tavui, and Don Larcombe.
The races included the men’s and women’s V6 (6 six seater Outrigger Canoe) events.
The men’s crew of Ruari Coffey, Chris Erardi, Sharkey (Mark Oman), Ken Tavui, Jim Galea and Don Larcombe worked hard to get third place and in the women’s event, Nadia Pearn, Kerrie Meiers, Yvonne Stanfield, Jenny Larcombe, Kathy Long, and Ebony Pollock placed second in a close finish.
Club secretary Kath Long, after the race, commented it was a tough race not only due to the competition but also battling against the strong offshore winds.
Sunday’s race events continued on the Patterson Lakes course due to the unfavourable weather on the Port Phillip Bay.
Team Inlanders participated in events of the Men OC2 and Women OC2 (double outrigger canoe) races.
Success was had in each event, with women’s Nardia Pearn and Ebony Pollock second and Jenny Larcombe and Kathy Long third.
In the men’s event, Ruari Coffey and Ken Tavui took third place.
The weekend events were a lot of fun despite the windy conditions and coastal swells which kept us off the Bay.
The next event on the Southern States Zones calendar is the Inlanders V12 Winery Run (two six-seater outrigger canoes strapped together).
This event is scheduled for April 5-6, running from Barmah to Echuca over the two days.
