MERRIGUM

On Saturday Merrigum commenced this year’s pennant against Tallygaroopna at the Tally green but unfortunately failed to win a single point. On the day we were outplayed by the home team and the need for some more structured practice is obvious.
Glen Smith played Barry Rutherford but lost by nine shots. If you take out ends 10 and 16 on which we lost nine shots in total, you will see it could have been much closer.
John Firmer drew Bill Conley and also lost by nine shots. They led after four ends but after that they slowly fell behind.
Our best rink was skipped by David Pettifer against G Murphy and only went down by three shots. They dropped two fives and a four, so did a great job to get so close.
Unfortunately I didn’t get the last card but Gary Mott skipped and they lost by an unknown margin.
On Tuesday we will travel to Shepparton Golf to begin Tuesday pennant and we wish all players a happy day out on the greens at last. Please be ready to leave at 8.45am. You must bring your own lunch.
Our evening meal began successfully last Thursday and will continue each Thursday at 6pm. Please bring a salad and realise that the board has set the new price for this season of $10. If you are attending please let Joe know by Wednesday evening on 0428 552 466.
Most players should have their hamper books already but if not you will soon be given a book to sell. All donations for the hampers will be gratefully received.
We now have three junior members, which is very pleasing to all members of the club. Welcome to new members Lane and Clarry Talbot.

KYABRAM
GV Pennant Bowls first round was a mixed bag for Kyabram. Division 1 defeated Euroa at Euroa 107 shots to 94, Division 2 lost to Shepparton Golf 67 to 121 at home, Division 4 lost to Nagambie 95 to 122 at Nagambie and Division 5 defeated Shepparton Park 1 95 shots to 51 at home.
Greg Shilling’s rink was able to perform a bowling miracle at Euroa. They trailed five to 19 on the 13th end when the heavens opened. Heavy rain changed the green and his team’s chances. They piled on the pressure and scored 23 shots to four to run out winners. Paul McInnes skipped and led his team well to a comfortable 28 to 20 victory. Glenn Fields’ team was victorious thanks to a fine team effort and great bowling up front from Sally Beach and Keith Button. Noel Reddrop’s team found life difficult for most of the day. They finally got a roll on over the last four ends to score eight shots to nil to only go down 18 to 27. Division 1 travels to Hilltop/Tatura next Saturday
Division 2 ran into a red hot Shepparton Golf at home. Peter O’Brien’s team fared best for Kyabram only losing by one shot, 22 to 23, in a tight match. Phil Denham and his team fought hard all day. They were tied 17-all on the 18th end. They dropped a three on the 24th end and lost 20 to 24. Our president, John Hausler, and his team found Saturday to be long and painful. They dropped multiple scores on 13 ends over the day and lost 11 shots to 40. Des Campbell’s team made a horror start to the season being 23 to zero down on the ninth end. They gained some composure and scored 14 to 11 over the rest of the game but lost 14 to 34. Division 2 goes to Mooroopna Golf next weekend.
Division 4 found the new greens at Nagambie quite a handful. Ray Harrison’s team tried hard all day but found its opponents a bit too good and lost 23 to 34. Graeme Woodcock and his team had a slashing match all day. They drew 28 all with their Nagambie opponents. Ted Hazelman’s team tried hard, but was unable to overcome the opposition and went down 20 shots to 29. Nardo Dipetta had an interesting game on the quick Nagambie surface. The team came close at times but went down 24 shots to 31. Division 4 ventures to Shepparton Park for next week’s round
Division 6 welcomed Shepparton Park 1 to Kyabram and then piled on the pressure. Brad McIntosh with his father, Stan, Ian George and Graeme Newman only allowed their opponents to score on six ends for the day and romped home 25 shots to 10. Jan McFadyen led her team to a 34 to six lead on the 17th end. Shepparton rallied, but Kyabram was able to win easily, 39 to 21. Geoff Hocking had the close one for the day. They trailed six to 17 on the 15th end but stormed home scoring 14 shots to three for a hard fought draw. Division 6 hosts Dookie at the Kyabram greens next Saturday.
VALLEY VIEW
Finally, after a long wait, we are back to bowls this Friday and Saturday, after planned starting dates had been changed due to COVID vaccination rules.
We have been able to practise only, so there has been lots of that in the lead-up.
In the off-season there have been a few changes in regard to regional divisions; we now come under the umbrella of Bendigo Campaspe Goldfields Bowls Region, which consists of clubs from Bendigo, Campaspe and Goldfields.
Our Campaspe Valley Bowls Division has clubs from Deniliquin, Deniliquin RSL, Echuca, Elmore, Kyabram Valley View, Lockington, Mathoura, Moama, Rich River, Rochester and Tongala.
We wish our Division 2 Midweek team good luck for this Friday, we are playing at Valley View against Moama starting at 9.30am and consisting of 21 ends.
The Saturday team travels to Echuca and has a 1.30pm start.
Good bowling.
