The Deniliquin Blue Heelers Rugby League Club hosted NRL Development Coach Brittany Everett on Wednesday night.
Everett ran a beginners' clinic, creating a strong foundation for players moving forward into the season.
Having trained since Wednesday, January 8 the Blue Heelers continue to build toward what would be the club’s comeback season, following its recess since 1977.
The club at one time had won three premierships in a row, from 1969–1971 before their eventual demise in 1977 when the club folded and withdrew from the Group 17 competition.
The club has been getting 10 or more players at training each Wednesday.
As well as local players, it also has others from neighbouring towns which will help with player registration numbers and rules for staying in the ProTen Community Cup.
The club must have enough players registered for a male and female team before the beginning of the season and neither team is allowed to forfeit throughout the season.
Club president Kurt Longford said he was optimistic about the club’s prospects moving forward, but realistic regarding what needs to happen.
“Wednesday night went well; we also had a few who usually attend who were unable make it due to work commitments.
“The club is still on the lookout for players. We need plenty for both sides, but especially the women's team,” Longford said.
The Proten Community Cup season kicks off on Saturday, May 24 with the Blue Heelers travelling to Ivanhoe, where they are set to play Hillston.
The club continues training each Wednesday at 6.30pm and invites all interested people to attend.
