On Monday, February 21, the years 3 and 4 students at Benalla College all enjoyed learning how to be “Hockey Ready!” and zoomed around dribbling their hockey ball “eggs”.
They tried to avoid becoming seaweed during a game of “Hoctopus”, and dodged the hockey eagle during “Rob the Nest”.
Benalla Hockey Club president Lee Manning said hockey was an inclusive sport, with people of all ages and experience levels encouraged to get involved.
“Hockey is a great game, where all the family can play together,” Manning said.
“We have players aged five to 80 playing in Benalla, and all fitness levels can find a place on the field. It’s surprisingly easy to play.”
The Hockey Roadshow is heading to Australian Christian College Hume tomorrow, with principal Sam Woods excited for what it will offer the students.
“The idea behind it is getting kids involved in sport and giving them good opportunities to learn a sport which maybe they haven’t tried before,” Woods said.
“I think the involvement in community sport is pretty low compared to previous years.
“If you go back to when our grandparents were young everyone was a part of the tennis or hockey or cricket club, for example.
“Nowadays lots of kids aren’t necessarily involved, so this is a great opportunity to expose them to team sports and community sports.”
Benalla Hockey Club will also be hosting a free “Come and Try Hockey” event tomorrow, Thursday, March 3, which promises to be an afternoon full of fun games and activities .
All equipment is provided, with kids from the ages of five to 12 from 4.30 to 5.30pm, and teens and adults from 6 to 7pm.
The Benalla Hockey Field is at Churchill Reserve, on the corner of Waller and Margaret Sts.
