Midweek pennant semi final; Tungamah travelled to Corowa Civic to play Corowa RSL. Civic are to be congratulated on the condition of their green, who like Tungamah all work done is on voluntary basis.
It proved to be a great day with Tunga winning all three rinks for a 73 to 42 shot victory.
All players contributed to this excellent result. We play Yarrawonga next as they were defeated by Commercial Club, who have gone through the season undefeated.
Winner of this match will play in the Grand Final, so Tunga needs to maintain their positive attitude for a while longer and bring a final reward to the club from the Pennant season.
Tungamah Bowls Club Farmers Night – Melaluka Trading
This is an event that has become annual at the Tungamah Bowls Club. Over recent years this night that has seen a gradual changing of the guard.
Many of the local farmers are now the sons of the farmers who established farms in the fertile region that abounds Tungamah.
It was a terrific sight to see at the Bowls Club on Friday night, it wasn’t at a tennis, football or cricket match but a bowls event.
Usually understood to be for the oldies, to see the young mothers sitting on blankets entertaining the youngest of their children while those a bit older entertained each other or sucked on Zooper Doopers.
When their dad’s weren’t bowling the kids had the small foam bowls that Tungamah have (specifically for kids entertainment, used weekly on social nights), out and had their own version of bowls.
Enjoying the freedom of play in a safe restricted area with plenty of adult supervision.
They were very well behaved, and it is obvious there is a lot of talent in the Tungamah district, in this very junior age group but more so in the adult age bracket, both men and women. Farmers night is sponsored by Melaluka Trading, who have been great supporters of the club for several years. One small way to thank and repay the locals and their families for the business they receive during the year.
Apart from the bowls competition, which is cutthroat, is the massive raffle for which Tungamah Bowls Club wish to thank the sponsors, Haeuslers, Hunters, O’Connors, Agnvet and Tungamah Hotel.
Without sponsors, clubs just don’t exist. We are fortunate and grateful for the continued loyal support we receive from the above mentioned for this particular event.
Victors on the night taking home the Meleluka Trophy was the Wren team, Allan Ralph, Frank Einsporn, Terry Brear and Lockie Wren. Runners Up was the team of Connels. Next year will see these teams of local farmers vying to win this impressive trophy.
Thanks to all that supported this night, to the members who helped in any way and the loyal locals for their continued support of any function the club holds.
Upcoming events: March 18t: First Responders Cup. A night for our 000 heroes to let their hair down and enjoy a night free from stress and away from the phone.
April 5: Boosey Classic, O’Hallorans Roller Door 1000.
April 12: Presentation Night and drawing of the major $5000 raffle.
Tungamah Bowls Club has much to offer the community, Thursday nights still a popular place to be for a BBQ, bee, members draw and social fun.
Yarrawonga Bowls
Monday 2/4/2 - Monday 17/2/25
Finally a game of Monday bowls! 20 bowlers took to the green after a few weeks off due to the unrelenting heat.
Greg Fisher, Les Wilson and Mick Crawford won the day and jackpot was claimed by Gwen and Shane Maddox.
Weekend pennant - Sat 22
A4s were the sole remaining hope for weekend pennant and unfortunately fell just short of winning a place into the GF going down to North Albury 64/94 in the preliminary final.
Well done A4s on an incredibly good season ..you have been consistent all year. You did the club and yourselves proud!
Ladder Pos 4th.
Midweek pennant
Well we started the week with 3/3 teams in the finals and ended the week with 2/3 still grasping for glory in the Preliminary finals.
Unfortunately all 3 teams lost but B1s and B2s were in the fortunate position of having the double chance...crossing everything that we can get 1 or even better both teams into the granny!
A1s faced off against cross-border rivals YMGCR, unfortunately going down 45/61.
Whilst well beaten on 2 rinks, Jason McCloys rink inclusive of Ros King, Wayne Lowrie and Stephen Day had an excellent day on the green and providing a glimmer of hope winning 25/12.
Well done on your season A1s, let’s take it up another level next season. Ladder Pos 3rd.
B1s - what a difference a couple of weeks can make in bowls! 2 weeks ago the B1s Swanpool at home who they were competing with for the double chance winning super convincingly 82/50.
Unfortunately, the tables were turned in the semi-final going down 60/70 in a tight game.
In a promising sign for the prelim, Ray Butlers rink continued their good form winning 28/17..good job Ray, Bev Norwood, Peter Humphries and Shane Maddox.
Let’s get that coveted spot in the Grand Final team! Good luck vs Myrtleford! Ladder Pos 1st.
B2s had a loss to the unbeaten Commercial Club but certainly put them on notice with a gallant defeat going down 54/59 second spot on the ladder.
The rink skipped by Ray Sheridan totally turned tables with a hugely convincing win against a rink that hasn’t tasted defeat all season and who had trounced them 2 weeks ago.
Gwen Maddox lead beautifully with Di Day and Rosene Andrews combing well and Ray turning on the heat; producing a very satisfying 22/13 win.
We’ve now shown we are capable of matching them but first we have to get over the very competitive Tungamah in the prelim.
Let’s do it B2’s! Ladder Pos 2nd.

Club Championships
The final of the Women’s Club pairs was played last Wednesday with Claire Sanders and Sue Middleton proving too good for Evelyn Calder and Kim Silver. Congratulations ladies!
The game was played with lots of laughs and in great spirits. Mixed Pairs and 1 day play off open to all are our last remaining championships to be decided.
60s and over
One team travelled to Moyhu who were the host club, skipped by Tom Dodds. Lost the first game but won their next two. Had a good day as always.
Vale Brian Quinn
Well we sadly have had a run of prominent past members passing in recent times. Brian Quinn was a much valued and influential member of our clubs rich history.
Amongst his contributions and achievements, Brian was President 1976-1978, Secretary 1978-1994, Club Champion 1985/86, Life member from 1982 and O&M Champion of Champions 1985.
Much of the process to incorporate Yarrawonga Bowls Club was done by Brian and Geoff Haebich. Brian was also responsible for the re-introduction of Barefoot Bowls on Thursday nights in 2015 and played a major part in the early success of Barefoot Bowls. His Funeral was held last Thursday, February 20 and was extremely well attended.
The after-service function was appropriately held back at the clubrooms and again the numbers were a testament to him.
The family and club are extremely appreciative of all the members and friends who donated their time and provided amazing food, serviced the bar, helped clean up and gave Brian a truly fitting send off.
You did him proud!
To all club members and the wider community, good health and good bowling.
YMGCR Bowls
Midweek Pennant Semi Final
The A1s played Yarrawonga at Corowa RSL last Tuesday and as mentioned in last weeks article, playing this match at Club Mulwala would have seemed the logical choice of venue, giving both teams supporters and players a venue that is virtually on their doorstep.
This was an anticipated match as it was a semi final and a local derby. After all shots had been played it was YMGCR who prevailed, and they certainly prevailed in style. Final scores were YMGCR 61 shots and 12 points to Yarrawonga 45 shots and 2 points. Winning in fine fettle for YMGCR were Laureen Smith (L), Ray Brown (2), Michael Vaughan (3), and Anne Miles who won 20 shots to Yarrawonga 10 shots.
Anchoring the win were Ian Febey (L), Shirley Hummel (2), Gary Presnell (3), and Ray Irvine (S), who won 29 shots to 10 shots.
The A1s now shape up to Wodonga at Wangaratta in the Preliminary Final.
The A2s also played a local rival in their semi final, when they played Club Mulwala at Wangaratta.
Having a great home and away season the A2s would have been entitled to be optimistic about their chances going into this game.
Regrettably for the A2s the cards did not fall their way.
After a match long tussle, the final score saw Club Mulwala 65 shots and 12 points defeat YMGCR 57 shots and 2 points.
Winning well for YMGCR were, Sue Evans (L), Vicki Withers (2), Greg Fisher (3), and Kerry Kinnane 25 shots to Club Mulwala 14 shots.
The A2s can look back on their season with pride and hopefully use the disappointing semi final result as a spur for next season. Well done one and all on your year.
Wednesday Social Bowls
24 players participated last week in weekly Wednesday 3 bowl nominated pairs.
Sharing first prize of $80 and a drink card each were Les Wilson and Doug Wheeler.
The Runners Up prize of $50 went to Vicki and Col Withers.
The losing team consolation prize of $20 went to Frank Lieberg and Kurt Bleckwhel.
The First Lucky Number prize of $20 went to Col Withers and the second Lucky Number prize went to Fred Donaldson.
As YMGCR will be hosting the Bernie Bott tournament next Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, there won’t be any Wednesday Social Bowls this week.
Just a reminder that Wednesday Social Bowls will be back the following week March 5 commencing at 12.30pm.
Charity Barefoot Bowls week 2.
Last Tuesday saw round 2 of the Charity Barefoot Bowls Challenge again attract a terrific field of 84 bowlers in much cooler conditions.
This year we have fourteen teams competing for the first time and their performances have been very impressive with NAB nuts and Fallons 2 remaining undefeated, a showdown may occur next week!
Round 3 is shaping up some very interesting games scheduled.
If readers have some spare time come along on Tuesday evening at 7pm and join the fun.
You never know you might get a game.
Until next week, good bowling.
ClubMulwala Bowls
Coach/ team administrator 2025/2026 – Club Mulwala is seeking a Coach/Team Administrator for the next season.
The successful coach will be well renumerated by Club Mulwala Bowls Club.
We have enjoyed an amazing successful season under the guidance of Geoff Mitchell as the coach and pennant administrator. Geoff Mitchell is about to complete his contract and continue his travels. Club members wish him well.
Club Mulwala have embraced Geoff and his skills over the past 12 months. The club was so blessed to have had Geoff as a coach and part of the Club Mulwala team.
Three of the 5 pennant teams are in the grand final. This is a fantastic result for the coach, committee, players, and volunteers who have all contributed to the season.

Midweek Pennant - The A2s travelled to Wangaratta to play against local rivals YMGCR to get a place in the semifinals. What a great game against friends, alas enemies on the green. Luckily, we won the game.

We will now face Moira to get a place in the grand final on Tuesday playing at Wangaratta once again.
Weekend Pennant - A4s won last week and are straight into the grand final. We are looking forward to playing Nth Albury on Saturday.
The amazing B2s faced Myrtleford in the preliminary final to get a place in the grand final. We had a very slow start after 5 ends we were 20-1 down.
The team had to dig deep and fight. We were so lucky to have a large group of supporters and a great coach cheering the team on. This certainly helped us win the game.
We overcame the slow start and ended winning. Club Mulwala shots 62, points 12. Myrtleford shots 53, points 2.
The best rink on the day was. (S) Gary Atkinson, (3) Lindsay Evans, (2) Greg Bennett, (L) Nicole McPherson. The team is so excited to be playing Corowa RSL on Saturday the Grand Final.
