Tungamah Bowls Club
Hold tight - we’re checking permissions before loading more content
Midweek Pennant – January 28: Tungamah travelled to Mulwala Services Club, short trip of the season.
Winning just one rink - Jeff, Tim, Pin and Phillip had a massive victory 31 to 8. This got the other two losers over the line, thank you.
This allowed Tunga to collect 10 points for a 64 to 51 win and keeps them in third spot on the ladder.
Wangaratta / Wareena is the second last match of the season and some of us will be trying to find some form.
Congratulations to Club Mulwala on the condition of the green and the excellent sandwiches you provided, they were much appreciated by all visiting clubs.
It was nice to sit around and enjoy your clubs hospitality under the shady trees. Thank you.
B1 Saturday Pennant – Feb 1: At home to Rutherglen, Tungamah supplied two players to the undermanned visiting club, so they played three a rink. This match was one with a difference. It really was the Costigan show on one rink, with Pop Barry Costigan, son Troy and Grandson’s Tom and Jack all playing in the same team.
Luck of the draw saw two of their opponents were Chris Flanagan (nee Megarity formerly from Tungamah and Barry’s sister-in-law) and son Peter Megarity of Tungamah.
Battle was apparently on more than the bowling front and it appears the Tungamah Costigan’s won on both. 95 to 34.
A great day, played in good, loud spirit and the afternoon session continued for some time into the evening. Currently in third spot, last game of the season we travel to Yarrawonga.
A3s Saturday Pennant – Feb 1: Short several players, Tunga travelled to Benalla, another O&M club struggling with their green.
Tungamah were defeated 94 to 81, only collecting 4 points and we sit outside the final four.
A victory against Border Golf the last game of the season, would be a bonus.
Yarrawonga Bowls
Monday 2/4/2 - No game due to heat
Weekend Pennant – Saturday, February 1.
A1s The A1s travelled to Wodonga and went down 81/92 winning 2 of the 4 rinks. Gary Sanders rink had a win 22/17 and Jason McCloy, Stephen Day, Robbie Wickham and Ros King had a great game 27/15.
With only 1 round to go the 1s need to beat top placed Corowa RSL at Corowa to retain 4th spot and a place in the finals. Let’s go A1s bring home the win! Ladder Pos 4th.
A4s had an outstanding win at home against Benalla with a sensational 115/46 win.
Neil Hocking’s rink, comprising of Chris O’Meara, husband and wife duo of Pam and Doddy Dodman totally dominated winning 31/8, surely earning a round of drinks Mr President!
A win in the final round at home against 3rd placed Corowa RSL should ensure a place in the finals. Go team!! Ladder Pos 4th
B1s only just went down to Wangaratta at home with a very close 50/53 margin. Bad luck B1’s, it was close across all rinks and Tommy Dodds, Rosie Andrews, Jules Allan and June Binental once again got their rink across the line.
Unfortunately, with only 1 round to go it does mean the B1’s will miss out on finals action this year. Next season crew!! Ladder Pos 7th
B2s also had a narrow loss at home winning 2/3 rinks but unfortunately it wasn’t enough to claim the victory, going down 56/61 and also missing a spot in the finals.
Ray Sheridan continued his recent run of form and his rink of Jack Park, Graeme Thomas and Kim Silver won their rink with Jack playing like a youngster now he has abandoned his stick, it’s time to cut the strings Jackie!!
A chip off the old block, his son Gary obviously was taught well as his rink of Neil Hamilton, Bruce Owen and Rod Nicoll had a fantastic win playing a player short for most of the game after Neil retired unwell.
Amazing effort you guys. Top win 23/14. Let’s finish the season with a win! Ladder Pos 7th
Midweek Pennant
All divisions are travelling quite well in midweek and Yarra Bowls are hoping for a strong showing come finals time in a few weeks
A1s went down away to 1st placed Wodonga 43/58. The bowls are always entertaining between the 2 clubs and the rink side entertainment was just as enthralling this week. Whilst we lost the 3 rinks, 2 were only by the narrowest of margins.
With 2 rounds to go, let’s consolidate and ensure we are strong contenders come finals. We have the talent and the will ...let’s find the way! Ladder Pos 4th.
B1s had a great win away against Benalla winning all 3 rinks at 75/39.
Mick Crawford’s rink comprising Micky Dixon, Sammy Smith and Doddy combining for an excellent 34/10 result. Keep going you lot.
Finals are only 2 weeks away and all rinks are performing well. The scribe smells the faint whiff of a premiership in the air. Let’s ensure we get there after such a consistent season! Ladder Pos 2nd
B2s had a solid victory at home vs Corowa civic 2 74/54 always a tough but friendly contest! It was pleasing to get all rinks up on the day.
The rink skipped by Jock McQualter included Kim Silver, Kaylene Tait and returning Judy Wenzel (who had a day out ..welcome back Jude!) combined beautifully, producing a very convincing 28/13 win.
Jock continued his stellar form Kay and Kim combined beautifully. Ray Sheridan, Rosene Andrews, Di Day (welcome back Di, we missed you) and Noeleen Borg also having an excellent 26/14 win.
Important to win next week as last round is against the undefeated Commercial Club. Let’s ensure we get that double chance! Ladder Pos 2nd

Well done to Jules Allan and Lisa Burnham on performing so well in the O&M state novice event with Jules reaching the final 16 and Lisa also performing well.
The girls are new members to bowling and the club, and are already proving to be a huge asset on and off the green. A breath of fresh air to the club!
Well done Garry Sanders and Claire Sanders reaching the finals of the state singles, only narrowly missing out on progressing further.
Good luck to Claire Sanders and Sue Middleton in the upcoming State 4s

Harold Wignell remembered
October 15, 1921 – December 25, 2024.
Former president, secretary, life member and B Grade champion in 1998-99 of the Yarrawonga Bowls Club, well-known local centenarian, Mervin Harold Wignell has been remembered as a sportsman, keen RSL member and hard worker.
Harold was a very much loved and respected member, not only of the bowls club, but in the general community.
Mr Wignell passed away on Christmas Day with a large funeral service conducted at the Chapel of Yarrawonga Mulwala Funeral Services on January 9.
Harold was born in Murchison on October 15, 1921 with 5 brothers and 3 sisters. The family moved to Katunga in 1928 where he finished school and started work.
He joined the Airforce in July 1940. His skill and dedication earned him the rank of sergeant by the end of the war. After the war, he initially worked in spinning mills in Richmond. He returned to Katunga in 1948 to help his brothers cart wheat. In September 1949, he started work as a water bailiff in Katunga, fibbing on his application that he could swim when he couldn't!
Throughout his life Harold was married twice and has five stepchildren.
In 1978, he married his second wife, Jeannie, who had four children from a previous marriage.
They spent many happy years together and had a loving and special relationship. Two of his fondest memories was the sense of belonging he experienced on his first Father's Day when he received gifts and cards, feeling that he had been accepted into the family.
Later, when he became a very proud grandfather on the arrival of his three grandchildren, Jason, Nicole and Matthew.
Finally, in April 1979, he moved back to Yarrawonga where he remained until his retirement in 1981.
He always remembered making his mark at Yarrawonga when, within three weeks of taking over, he had the job of draining the lake and painting the gates.
Jeannie and Harold enjoyed travelling during their holidays at one time visiting the USA with daughter Julie and grandson Jason.
Their travel included several trips to Queensland, Canberra, Sydney and Tasmania to name a few. Harold loved his sport.
He played cricket and football as a youngster and in 1975, took up both golf and bowls which he played for many years until he was physically unable to continue.
He enjoyed watching football, lawn bowls, cricket and tennis on television at every opportunity.
After his retirement in 1981, Harold enjoyed spending time at the Yarrawonga Bowls club. He worked on the greens committee, called the bingo at one stage for the club and over the years held the whole gamut of committee positions.
He was the B grade champion, which he was very proud to achieve. A past president of the club and was greatly honoured when he was made a life member.
A reading of ‘life is like a game of bowls’ was read to mark Harold’s love of bowling and his local club.
Jeannie died in 2000 and Harold continued to live in their unit in Hovell Street. As his health deteriorated, he ultimately moved into Woods Point nursing home in April 2019. Woods Point became his home where he lived for over five years. He found a new extended family among the staff, who loved and cared for him deeply. He seemed to know everyone's name and loved all of the staff in return.
In 2021, he was honoured and thrilled to be one of the recipients of a special presentation, a framed acknowledgement presented to Royal Australian Airforce veteran centenarians, commemorating 100 years of the Airforce in Australia.
Harold was a well-known and very popular member of the Yarrawonga/Mulwala RSL for over 50 years which is why it was with great pleasure that members celebrated his milestones birthdays with him over the past several years.
Harold's sense of humour and gentle nature were constants through his life. He always finished each phone call with his daughters with a joke.
He was ever the epitome of a true gentleman. He never had a bad word to say about anyone and was always respectful of other people. He was eternally true to his values.
It was all of this and his gentle nature which made him an ideal role model, patriarch and lodestone for everyone in his orbit. Harold you will always be remembered, loved and greatly missed by those whose lives you touched.
The wake was held at the Yarrawonga Bowling Club.

YMGCR Bowls
Midweek
The A1s undertook the trip to Wangaratta last Tuesday for what may have been a finals defining match.
Wangaratta are always a tough nut to crack at Wangaratta, and so it was for this important game for YMGCR’s season.
After the last bowl of the match had been delivered it was YMGCR who had prevailed. Final scores, YMGCR 64 shots and 12 points to Wangaratta 57 shots and 2 points. Beating the drum in fine style for YMGCR were Laureen Smith (L), Ray Brown (2), Michael Vaughan (3), and Anne Miles (S), who won 23 shots to Wangaratta 15 shots. Also contributing to the overall win were Rhonda Irvine (L), Chris Horne (2), Greg Green (3), and Ian Brimblecombe (S), who won 20 shots to Wangaratta 18 shots.
The A1s are in the 6th place on the ladder and the penultimate game of the season sees them host Wodonga at the Golf Club.
The A2s were also away to Wangaratta and regrettably couldn’t come away with the points.
After the 63rd end it was Wangaratta 68 shots and 12 points to YMGCR 48 shots and 2 points.
Winning in fine style for YMGCR and securing two invaluable rink points were Bill Jenkins (L), Judy Leeson (2), Cliff Morton (3), and Allen Goudge (S), who won convincingly 24 shots to 15 shots.
The A2s are still in 4th place on the ladder.
However, Wodonga are 5th and are only one point behind the A2s. With only two games remaining the A2s can’t afford any slip ups and next week play top side Moira at home in what could the match that decides finals or 5th place.
Wednesday Social Bowls
24 players participated last Wednesday for social, which is kicking off early at 10am during the warmer weather.
Winning first prize of $80 and a drink card each were Ray Brown and Tom Kindred.
The Runners Up prize of $60 went to Greg Green and Andy LeFevre.
The Losing Rink consolation prize of $20 went to Gavin Borwick and Neville Coleman. The first Lucky Number prize of $20 was won by Bill Hidson and the second Lucky Number prize of $10 was won by Col Withers.
Weekend Pennant
The A1s travelled to Rutherglen for a heat induced early start last Saturday, and in what is always a tough assignment went down narrowly.
Rutherglen 88 shots and 14 points to YMGCR 80 shots and 4 points.
Bringing home rink points for the A1s were Col Withers (L), Shirley Hummel (2), Michael Vaughan (3), and Ray Irvine (S), who won 22 shots to 16 shots.
Also contributing were Rhonda Irvine (L), Bill Jenkins (2), Ray Brown (3), and Greg Green (S), who won 17 shots to Rutherglen 16 shots.
The A1s are in 6th place and are a theoretical chance to play finals, which all pivots on the last game of the season when YMGCR host Wodonga at the Golf Club.
The A3s played Wodonga, at Wodonga last Saturday and couldn’t conjure up a win, against what is always tough opposition at Wodonga’s home track.
The final scores saw Wodonga victorious 91 shots and 16 points to YMGCR 75 shots and 2 points.
Winning well for the A3s were Barb Tennyson (L), Norm Windebank (2), Cliff Morton (3), and Greg Fisher (S), who won 26 shots to Rutherglen 24 shots.
The A3s are still in 4th place on the ladder, and in the final game of the season play 5th placed Tungamah, at Tungamah, who are only 7 shots behind the A3s.
As far as finals chances go, this is a must win for the A3s and it should be a really entertaining game.
If you aren’t playing on Saturday, why not take the trip to Tungamah and give the A2s a bit of away support.
The A5s played host to Chiltern last week and unfortunately for YMGCR it was a convincing away win for Chiltern. Final scores Chiltern 66 shots and 12 points to YMGCR 46 shots and 2 points.
Winning well for the home side were Carolyn Boston (L), Gavin Borwick (2), Noel Millar (3), and Les Balfour (S), who won 20 shots to Chiltern 12 shots.
The A5s are in 8th place on the ladder, 9 points behind 7th placed Chiltern. Their final assignment for the season is an away fixture at Wodonga.
Ladies Pairs Final
The final of the Ladies Pairs was played on Friday and in what was a close, and entertaining tussle, which was played in great spirit it was Anne Miles and Robyn Forge who prevailed over Jan Morton and Jodi Powell.
Congratulations to all the ladies for putting on a great final performance.
Until next week, good bowling.
