Football clubs across the Goulburn Murray have been registered as Container Deposit Scheme Victoria donation partners thanks to AFL Goulburn Murray.
The partnership, led by AFL Victoria, means that members and supporters of local clubs can nominate their team for the 10c refund when depositing eligible drink containers.
Those thirst-quenching post-game beers or soft drinks can now pour money back into the club.
There are six refund points located in Shepparton alone and to find the nearest drink container deposit location head to the Container Deposit Scheme Victoria website.
Alexandra Football Netball Club led the charge in 2024 after it raised more than $14,000 by collecting empty drink containers after match days and social functions.
AFL Goulburn Murray regional manager Shaun Connell said the program was a great opportunity for clubs to raise some extra money for their communities.
"All our clubs have been allocated a Donation Partner ID which they can activate and cash in through Victoria’s Container Deposit Scheme," Connell said.
"We have seen other clubs raise significant financial contributions through the scheme, and it is a great way to get everyone involved in club fundraising.
“Encourage your community to collect and return their eligible drink cans, bottles and cartons to your club will help your club cash in faster.”
VicReturn's inaugural CEO Jim Round said he hoped to see more clubs hop on the environmentally-friendly program.
“Footy clubs are at the heart of local towns, and Alexandra Football Netball Club has shown just how much can be achieved with a bit of team spirit and simple behaviour changes," Round said.
“Instead of throwing money away, we’d love to see more clubs jump on board and turn their supporters’ recycling efforts into real wins on and off the field."
