The Bulls were dragged back down to earth on Saturday, seven days after finding the fortune they had been building toward for north of three months.
Round eight of the Victorian Rugby Premiership had a harsh familiarity to it as Kiwi Hawthorn pushed aside Sonny Tahuriorangi’s men 43-10 at Lewin Reserve.
Approaching the tie, Tahuriorangi would have felt primed to prise another set of points from a side situated one rung higher than his Bulls on the ladder.
However, that desire simply did not translate to the pitch.
Hawthorn busted the line on seven occasions to the Bulls’ one, fly half Tyson Tahuriorangi storming home for the visitors’ only try.
A Jordan Crawford penalty got the Bull to double digits, but with that not even near enough to secure a bonus point, there was little to take from what was a dour day for the union side.
Focus now turns to Eltham — the Bulls’ next test — which currently sits inside finals contention.
With little room to breath in the table’s top half, Saturday is a chance for Tahuriorangi to spoil Eltham’s chances and remedy a sixth-round defeat at the hands of the east Melbourne side.
