It makes Saturday's games a crucial early-season juncture to separate outfits on the table.
Numurkah began its campaign with a tight triumph over Rumbalara, but fell comfortably to Finley in round two.
Coach Sean Harrap is hoping his charges can quickly get back on the winners’ list during a trip to Mulwala.
“We got off to a really good start in round one against Rumba and you're never going to complain about being one and one after two games,” Harrap said.
“But I thought we executed our skills poorly last week — especially by foot.
“The sides were pretty evenly matched, but our disposal really let us down.”
The Lions have started extremely well under the three-pronged leadership of Jason Sanderson, Bodhi Butts and Jackson Gash, and will be tough to beat on their unique home deck at Lonsdale Reserve.
“They're going pretty well, but a big focus for the first couple of weeks of the season is not to worry too much about the opposition,” Harrap said.
“We'll control what we can control and I think the smaller ground might suit us.
“Even though we're young and nippy, we're pretty good at the contest too, so we've just got to tidy up by foot a bit.”
One of the contested beasts on the Blues’ list is Shane Miller, who has impressed Harrap in the first two rounds.
“Shane just keeps on keeping on, he's been great,” he said.
“Rhys Cason works pretty hard both ways and Trent Baker was great down back last week.
“We don't want to rely on too few across the ground though, we need everyone to contribute.”
Josh and Ben Wellington will be handy inclusions for the Blues in round three.
Tongala and Deniliquin join Mulwala atop the table with two wins apiece.
The Rams head to Echuca South Recreation Reserve on Saturday to clash with United, with the Eagles yet to sing the song.
Co-coach Tim Holobowski hopes it will be a bounce-back clash for the Rams after a low-scoring loss to Rumba last round.
“I thought for three quarters we defended really well and played the windy conditions okay,” Holobowski told the Pastoral Times.
“What was disappointing was that we couldn’t find a way through the Rumba defence in the last quarter. We just got stuck on the defensive side of the ground and couldn’t get into more attacking positions.
“We’ll definitely learn a lot from this game and take away some areas to work on, but full credit to Rumbalara; they kicked three goals into the wind in the last quarter and took their chances when they presented.”
Tongala travels to take on Cobram in round three, with Rumba hosting Moama at Mercury Dve.
Other battles include Nathalia hosting Barooga and Finley taking on Congupna under lights.
