The teenage spinning sensation has been named as a marquee player for the Hurley’s Hotel Hounds in the upcoming Goulburn Valley Bush Bash League.
Although there is no guarantee Murphy will actually take to the field in the four-team competition.
“It all depends what January looks like for me from a personal point of view,” Murphy said.
“I’m hoping to be available for at least one of the games and so I can play in one of the local competitions again.
“It would be nice to play in front of family and friends again.”
Murphy has recently returned to Melbourne from South Australia after spending about a month in a Sheffield Shield hub.
Despite not being selected in the team for either of Victoria’s two games, Murphy said he still took plenty of lessons away from the experience.
“I loved every minute of it,” he said.
“I benefitted from being around an experienced bunch of guys who were playing some really good cricket.
“It was a pleasure to be able to sit back and watch guys such as Marcus Harris and Will Pucovski make some big scores.
“Unfortunately, we had two draws, but the pitches were never going to be easy to take 20 wickets on.”
Despite not playing any official games in recent weeks, Murphy has been involved in a series of practice matches.
The most recent came last week when he featured in a two-day game with other Victorian players.
“It was quite weird playing on the MCG for the first time when nobody was there,” he said.
“But it was nice to have a change up from the Junction Oval. When you actually look up you realise just how big the ground is.
“The sound of the ball hitting the willow was outstanding.”
On Saturday, Murphy returned to the field for St Kilda in Victorian Premier Cricket in the opening round of the season.
And to say he was excited in the lead-up to the game would be an understatement.
“I’m sick of practice matches,” Murphy said.
“We’ve got our three Australian internationals (Harris, Peter Handscomb and Nic Maddison) back in the side, so it’s really exciting.
“Hopefully we can get off to a good start. A lot of boys are itching to play after the Melbourne lockdown, so there is a really good vibe around the group.”
