Familiar faces litter Rivers’ team list, and as usual the local talents are doing their best to steal the show.
Moama product Todd Murphy led the way in the field for Rivers in Monday’s first clash against Mallee, taking 2-8 from his four overs (including a maiden) and affected two run-outs for good measure as the opposition stumbled to just 9-91 in its 20 overs.
Shepparton United’s Harry Tonks (1-10) was also in the wickets, but again it was Murphy who took charge with the bat, slashing an unbeaten 63 from 48 deliveries to steer Rivers to victory by eight wickets inside 13 overs.
On Monday afternoon, Nathalia’s Scott Morris (24), Central Park-St Brendan’s Andrew Lloyd (18) and Broadford’s Riley Mason (six) helped the Rivers scrap to 8-107 against the Waves.
Despite the low total, Morris (3-7), Tonks (3-12) and Murphy (2-10) were able to bowl the Waves out for 98 and secure victory.
It was a similar story in yesterday’s morning match, with Murphy (25) top-scoring in a middling total of 8-107 before the Rivers restricted the Falcons to 5-89 thanks to some tight bowling from Morris (1-13) and his teammates.
The tournament continues throughout the week, with the Rivers taking an early inside run for a spot in Friday’s Junction Oval final thanks to their 3-0 start.
The under-14 male Rivers are also tasting YPL action once more this week, with the outfit undefeated from four matches — which includes the first two rounds of games which were played last year.
Round three on Monday had the Rivers taking on the Spirit, and Tatura’s Jai Bailey (2-8) and Mooroopna’s Riley Moon (2-19) led a strong bowling effort to have the opposition 9-121 after 40 overs.
Rochester’s Kobyn James (37) and Bamawm-Lockington United’s Cody Thompson (27 not out) ensured Rivers reeled in the required runs during the penultimate over of their innings.
Yesterday against the Falcons, Thompson and Moon both snared a wicket as the opposition made 7-121 in its 40 overs.
James (26) was again impressive with the bat, as was Shepparton United’s James Jarrett (21 from 42 deliveries) and Katandra’s Talon Wilson (14 from 65).
BLU’s Declan Pearse has also been steady at first-drop for Rivers this week.
