Stolen car sees man face unusual charge

A man who stole his father’s car in Queensland and drove it to Victoria has been fined $500 after crossing state borders in the vehicle.

Barry Rogers, 48, of Nathalia, pleaded guilty in Shepparton Magistrates’ Court to bringing stolen goods into Victoria.

Prosecutor Leading Senior Constable Chris Cole told the court Rogers stole his father’s car after he had an altercation with him in Regents Park near Brisbane on March 17, 2019.

Rogers then drove the Holden Commodore back to Nathalia, where it was found five days later hidden near a milking shed on a property.

The vehicle was not damaged.

The court heard Rogers told police he did not have permission to take the car but was “going to call him (his father) when I got back to let him know where it was”, Leading Sen Constable Cole said.

Rogers’ solicitor Anthony Coote told the court his client had received a penalty in Queensland over the incident and this was “double jeopardy”.
