Thivvyaanandaa Sandran, 25, of Shepparton, pleaded guilty in Shepparton Magistrates’ Court to two counts of being a learner driver and driving without a supervising driver, two counts of driving while suspended, stopping in a bus lane, two counts of driving without L-plates, driving with P-plates without being a probationary driver, failing to produce a permit on request and failing to notify of change of address.
Prosecutor Senior Constable Kerrie Thomson said police pulled Sandran over while he was driving in Shepparton on June 15, 2024 with a learner’s permit that had been suspended from May 22, and without a supervising driver and L-plates.
The court heard he told police he was driving because he had to take his brother-in-law to work.
Sen Constable Thomson said Sandran denied his licence was suspended, but acknowledged he needed a supervising driver in the front seat and L-plates on the vehicle.
Sen Constable Thomson said Sandran also stopped at a bus stop outside Greater Shepparton Secondary College on September 12, 2024.
The court heard police pulled him over afterwards, and he couldn’t give them his learner’s permit.
He was again driving with no supervising driver and no L-plates.
He told police then it was “only today” that he was driving.
Sandran had lived in Shepparton for months but hadn’t changed the address on his licence, the court heard.
The car he was driving was impounded for 30 days on each occasion.
Representing himself in court, Sandran said his girlfriend was next to him in the car when he stopped in the bus zone, but she had an Indian licence.
Magistrate Simon Zebrowski said Sandran had now been caught driving without a supervising driver or L-plates three times.
Mr Zebrowski said Sandran was “drowning in fines” and “paying to get your car out of the impound”.
“You’ve got to get smart,” he said.
“You’ll never get out from under it.”
Sandran was fined $1000.
