“I don’t know what’s going on with the gentleman, he was non-verbal as a result of something else that has gone on, not because he’s mute,” Shepparton police Acting Sergeant Sav Chitikena said.
Sgt Chitikena said officers got no response from the male when they responded to the scene.
He said the man — who is from Shepparton and known by police — was holding a foldable fishing knife in his hand and was stopping traffic along the road.
Police instructed him to drop the knife multiple times, but he did not comply, according to Sgt Chitikena.
Eventually, police tasered the man when he began to approach officers.
“Initially he was fine and afterwards he was approaching, and with a deadpan face you never know what to expect,” Sgt Chitikena said.
Police tasered the man twice, after the initial tasering didn’t work.
Ambulance Victoria responded to the scene.
The man was handcuffed and loaded into an ambulance to be taken to hospital for a medical and mental health check.
Sgt Chitikena said restraints were used for safety and the priority was to get a welfare and mental health check under way.
He urged members of the public to be safe if they witnessed similar events on the roads.
“Don’t stop and get out and try to help, just call 000, please.”
