The Shepparton man, 68, pleaded guilty in the County Court to maintaining a sexual relationship with a child under 16 years.
The court heard of four occasions the man had sex with the girl over six months in June 1991, including in her home, in a bungalow and in a car in the Shepparton region.
On one of the occasions the girl woke to the man having sex with her.
The girl reported the offending to the police in May 2018 when she was an adult.
The man was meant to be sentenced last week after a further plea from the defence counsel which included the results of a neuropsychological report.
The man’s barrister Glenn Casement argued prison would be more onerous for his client than for most people as he had had two strokes — one in early 2019 and another in August the same year.
However, Judge Gerard Mallaly said there was no medical evidence of the second stroke before him and he thought it would be a “critical feature” of the defence case.
The matter was adjourned until March so medical records from August 2019 can be obtained.
Until this court appearance, the man had been on bail, however Judge Mallaly moved to revoke his bail and put him in prison while he awaited the finalisation of his case.
He said the sentence would inevitably end in prison when it was finalised.
