It comes after Greater Shepparton Secondary College was locked down last week after a gel blaster was mistaken for a weapon.
In a post on the Greater Shepparton Police Service Eyewatch page, police said they need caution the community about purchasing the items, which are for sale on the internet.
In Victoria, and several other states, these items are subject to legislation.
Gel blasters discharge small pellets of gel usually by way of a battery-operated device that compresses a spring.
”These are not firearms as they use a spring to discharge the projectile,” the post said.
”The issue is that they are exact copies of actual firearms, often with extraordinary attention to detail. “In the state of Victoria a device that can reasonably be mistaken for an actual firearm, while not functional as a working firearm, is classified as an imitation firearm.”
Police said the only way you can possess, carry, use, offer for sale or import an imitation firearm in the state of Victoria is with a Chief Commissioner’s Prohibited Weapons Approval or a Governor in Council Exemption.
