Red Cross nurses march down Wyndham St led by Mrs Ted Voumard.
Voumards the Jewellers, a family business, was adjacent to where she was marching.
Louis Voumard came to Shepparton in the late 1890s and repaired watches in the window of his shop, which was a source of intriguement for people passing by.
The nurses pictured volunteered to care for WW2 RAAF Recruits who were camped at the Shepparton Showgrounds when an outbreak of influenza took place. The nurses reported that the conditions for the boys were appalling. They slept on straw in the horse stalls.
Margaret Ryan, daughter of Mrs Voumard, recalls living in premises above the jewellery store as a child during the war. The store was taken over by McKeons in 1952. Voumards reclaimed it in 1956 until Fairleys purchased the premises around 1959.
