This is the family home I grew up in 16 Leithen St, Shepparton.
Back in the post-war era, a lot of homes were owner-built, with little or no restrictions on code.
There were little or no trade qualifications like there is today with home owners becoming “Jacks-of-all-trades” to put a roof over their heads.
Dad (Kevin) did just about everything, including roof tiling, plaster, external cladding and even plumbing.
I think it was only electrical and some brick laying (fire place) that was left to the experts.
People were allowed to live in sheds or old caravans while they built the family home.
In 1948 Dad drew up his own plans and started building his and mum’s great Aussie dream.
This Easter marks 75 years since my parents moved in to their humble abode, with my 95-year-old mother Dorothy (Dot) still living in it.

I loved your story, and from the comments it has brought back many memories for so many people.

Certainly well built in those days, and people were happy to have their own house, now everyone wants a 40 square house.

Lots of home owner builders and I mean built with there bare hands are very well constructed and great homes in Shepparton today. Dad built ours over two years from roughly 1951 to 1953 and my parents still live in it today. Dad and mum are well into there 90’s now. There are photos of the frame with paddocks all around looking north where the GV hospital is now. People said to them why are you building way out of town.

Dad also built his home, 2 Alamein St Shepparton mid 50s. He built it in twosections, kitchen, lounge, then Bedrooms and bathroom over several years. It's still there but modernised. Backyard has another house. We left in Christmas 1964. Dad built his second home in Bundaberg in 1967-68. Much larger, brick, and surprisingly aluminium sliding windows, with screens. No insect problem in our home. I remember the icecream man bringing ice blocks for our ice fridge in Shepparton.

Love this story Greg. They don't build em today like they did in those days. Houses hold some interesting stories. If only the walls could talk.
