Some of us of the vintage age were educated in the use of the pen with nibs, blotting paper and ink wells as our writing tools. The same did not apply for the use of the swords.
How would we translate Bulwer-Lytton’s words of wisdom now?
“The keypad is mightier than some automatic fire weapon.” Doesn’t have the same ring to it.
What does this have to do with the lack of written words for the editor? Nothing; it’s just rambling from an ancient reader.
Well, what is the reason for no letters to the editor? Are we too busy or too lazy? Have we forgotten how to construct a sentence from a group of words? Or is Grammar your mum’s mother?
Is the reluctance due to not having an opinion on matters of concern? Or is it the fear of expressing these views leading to enraging the politically correct of our numbers?
This is one avenue that we still have, thanks to our local newspapers. A way of stimulating debate, by exercising our freedom of speech in this wonderful country.
An example:
“I like covering my toast with Vegemite, then peanut butter, topped with honey.” Now, watch what this does to our readers. It’s that easy.
Be brave, have your say, and then let the editor do his job.
