Every Bite Tells a Story — what a fabulous initiative!
Having a couple of local folk who are in the know, who enjoy food, and who want to spread the word.
The hospitality industry is a hard gig, and I respect each and every person who works in the game.
In a much younger time, I have waitressed, washed dishes, cleaned, made beds, poured beers, rolled kegs and cooked counter meals, and none of it was easy. But it was fun, and these days, there is so much more diversity on offer, making it extremely challenging to keep pace and accommodate a fussy public.
So far, your writers have mentioned that establishments offer gluten-free or can make adjustments to accommodate dietary requirements, but mostly their reviews have been meat/fish-based dishes with regular chips, veg and burgers. I look forward to reading about the day that they may experience a vegan/vegetarian-focused venue where the food on offer is a dish that one would not usually cook at home. Too many times, the offer is chicken risotto (we’ll leave out the chicken), a veg burger (so much bread), or a toastie (where twice I was charged extra for removing the cheese), and a salad (in winter, really?).
We have great local produce, and with the range of talented people around, I’m sure there is a fruitful future for including many more plant-based options on menus. I’m salivating just thinking about it.
