A great way for students to learn new skills which will stay with them for a a lifetime, the program was offered in place of sport for successful applicants.
The program provides Year 9 and 10 students with an insight into fire safety and prevention whilst developing practical life skills and a general appreciation of community service and volunteerism.
The aim of the program is to develop an interest in the NSW RFS and its traditions, with the hope of encouraging cadets to continue service in the NSW RFS or other community service organisations.
Cadets are instilled with a knowledge of fire safety and preparedness and develop the qualities of leadership, self-discipline, self-reliance, initiative and team work.
The qualifications they earned as part of the course can be used in later life, whether it’s for work or for joining a volunteer rural fire brigade.
Finley High School program coordinator Nikki Bird said the students adapted to the program well.
“The students have learnt about the fire trucks and hoses, communications using the radios and clearing areas using hoe rakes and blowers.
“Each week their skills and confidence grew.
“Thanks to Dave Turner for leading the training along with the Tocumwal and Finley Rural Fire Brigades.”
