Having always enjoyed writing, reporting and talking to people, completing my placement at the local newspaper has given me the perfect opportunity to gain new skills and improve my writing abilities.
During my time at Riverine Herald, I was able to assist in interviewing three people and had the chance to write some stories for the newspaper.
One of these stories was about a woman who worked at the hospital in aged care for 48 years.
I got the chance to talk to this woman at the hospital about her experiences working in the nursing home, looking after the residents and the changes that have taken place during her time as an aged care worker.
Later in the week, I was able to go to the hospital again and I watched one of the journalists interview a group of people, and I was able to take photos.
It was interesting to hear the types of questions that were asked by the journalist who interviewed a family that had fundraised a large amount of money for the hospital.
I’ve been able to get tips from journalists which helped me improve my writing skills, and I also became more confident with interviewing people.
This experience has been very valuable, helping me refine my abilities in writing and interviewing.
My favourite parts of my work placement here have been the opportunities to write stories for the newspaper, as well as being able to go with journalists to interview and take photos of people.
I’ve felt very encouraged by my experiences at Riverine Herald to continue with writing and to pursue a career in journalism.
