Uniting Church Shepparton, St Brendan's, St Mary's Mooroopna, Salvation Army and the Seventh Day Adventist Church are among those running the Winter Night Shelter from June to August.
The Winter Night Shelter will provide more than 10 crisis accommodation beds through the coldest and darkest months of the year to help people off the streets and to give them somewhere temporary to stay while they connect with homelessness services.
More people accessed BeyondHousing's homelessness support service than ever before in 2020, and it's expected to continue as house and rent prices continue rising.
Salvation Army Shepparton branch captain Karyn Wishart said she would be excited to see the project in action after it was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“(It's) something we got the idea from seeing it done in various other places like Wangaratta, Bendigo, and some of the Melbourne societies have got it up and running,” she said.
“We're always finding gaps so hopefully this will help homelessness agencies to work together in this space.
“It's about creating the ability for homeless people locally to have a safe place to sleep."
Ms Wishart said the Winter Night Shelter would be the main charity effort supported by local Good Friday Appeal fundraising efforts.
She said the churches were looking for volunteers, and encouraged anyone interested in helping to contact The Salvation Army or local churches.
City of Greater Shepparton Mayor Kim O'Keeffe was at the launch of the program on Thursday night.
She said Greater Shepparton City Council had tipped in $5000 and the Federal Government another $5000, but more fundraising needed to be done.
She said more volunteers would be needed too, with up to 150 people needed.
Cr O'Keeffe said it was an important issue which needed to be tackled.
“We know Shepparton has really high homelessness statistics, programs like this show we're trying but we need funding and support,” she said.
