Wheels of Courage, named in honour of the late David Whelan, will be shown at the Deniliquin Show by Meredith Tasker after being retired to Deniliquin.
Wheels is owned by a syndicate of Deniliquin horse racing enthusiasts, led by former Deniliquin Racing Club president Greg Danckert.
The six-year-old gelding was sired by Kiss and Make Up and dammed by Elle, who was sired by General Nediym.
Wheels enjoyed a very successful racing career with 26 starts including two wins, one second place and five thirds placed finishing, leading to a total career prize money of $72,000.
Unfortunately, as he was ascending in the horse racing world, Wheels of Courage’s racing career was curtailed by injury.
Determined not to let injury be the end of Wheels’ life, he has been recuperating in Deniliquin.
Caring for the racehorse have been Greg and Lynda Danckert, and David’s sister in law Meredith Tasker and her husband Jamie.
During this recuperation period, plans were hatched to get Wheels involved in the ‘Off The Track’ (OTT) program for retired racehorses, giving horses a new lease on life.
He will make his post-retirement debut with Meredith in the ‘Fashions off the Track’ led event at the Deni Show this Saturday.
His life as a horse of leisure will then continue under the care and guidance of the Taskers.
Other members of David’s family, including his wife Tracey, will also continue to be involved.
This will include bush rides, attending the occasional show, and spending time with other friends made through the OTT program.
