In July, Taylar Knight and Adithi Gurunathan will fly to London for the International Youth Science Forum, thanks to support from the Cobram Barooga Apex Club.
After spending the past two months fundraising to get themselves to the UK and back, the two Cobram Secondary College students were delighted when the club agreed to sponsor their flights up to the cost of $3000 each.
Cobram Barooga Apex Club president Matt Triffitt said it was another way for the club to give back to the community through its fundraising events.
“It’s for things like this that we look forward to being able to help,” he said.
“After some deliberation, and an interview with the girls, we saw fit that this was a good opportunity not just for the girls but also for the community.
“It’s such an achievement for our area, not only for themselves but for our area, considering they’ve done so well.

“It shows that these things are reachable with a bit of hard work and tenacity.”
In February, the Year 12 students were selected to attend the international forum after taking part in the National Youth Science Forum in Canberra and Brisbane.
Since then, they’ve done everything possible to gather almost half of the $9000 they each need to get themselves to London and back.
Taylar and Adithi were both taken aback by the support from both Apex and the other clubs, such as Cobram Rotary, for getting them to where they were now.
“Paying for our flights is such a big thing, and we’re so grateful they were open to giving us the opportunity,” Adithi said.
Taylar added that flights to London and back comprised about a third of their total costs.
“For them to be open to paying it all is so significant,” she said.
“Trying to raise the large amount of money we need to go on the camp is very stressful.
“And them paying so much has taken so much stress off our shoulders.”
With their flights covered, Adithi and Taylar still need to cover the cost of insurance and camp fees, which are around $6600 a head.
They’ve started a GoFundMe page to reach the remainder of the total $9000 they each need.
So far, they’ve raised $500 of their $2000 GoFundMe target.
