But for one local family, the day held even more meaning.
It was the day Doctors Nishan and Madu Silva and their daughters Michelle and Joanne became Australian citizens.
The Silva family moved to Australia from Sri Lanka in 2018, but it wasn’t until May 2020 they made the move to Deniliquin.
When asked how they came to choose Deniliquin, Nishan said they found it to be “such a quaint place”.
Since their arrival, the Silva family has shown their willingness to integrate into the community by actively participating in local events and offering their support for community initiatives.
Despite the challenges brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Silva family has been grateful to the people of Deniliquin for their kindness and support.
“We have a lot of love for this community,” Nishan said.
“We moved here during COVID, and it was very hard for us.
“We are so thankful to the people of Deniliquin who helped us during that time.”
Having been in the community for four years now, the Silvas have enjoyed getting to know the community through various local organisations.
They are involved with South West Music and the ‘smiling club’, and attend as many community activities as possible.
“We could not be more happy to finally be fully a part of this community,” Nishan said.
“The reason we applied for our citizenships was because of how much we love this town.”
