Cool customer: Four-year-old Toby, a Jack Russell-cross-red heeler, had a dip in Victoria Park Lake on a hot day, but there wasn’t the extreme heat of summers past.

Despite appearances, Shepparton’s summer was warmer than average, even though there was only one day above 40°C.
The hottest day was December 18 when the mercury reached 41.5°C, but that was the only day approaching extreme heat.

One extreme day in December is in line with long-term averages but January and February usually produce another three 40-plus days.
In the summer of 2021-22, the hottest it got was 38.6°C in January and 38.8°C in February.
Measured in terms of days above 35°C, December was above average while January and February were below average.
Shepparton had 17 days over 35°C last summer compared to the mean of 18.7 days for the past 28 years.
Without the extreme temperatures summer might have felt milder, but it was actually warmer than the long-term mean temperatures.
The December mean was 30°C compared to the historical mean of 29.2°C, January 33.2°C (32.1°C) and February 31.1°C (30.9°C).
