Visy workers say protests have remained civil

Visy workers have denied reports of alleged harassment outside company properties in Shepparton as they continue their campaign for a better pay offer.

Workers at the company’s Wheeler St plant in Shepparton have been undertaking rolling industrial action since January, unhappy with Visy’s 8.75 per cent offer over three years under the latest proposed enterprise bargaining agreement.

Australian Manufacturing Workers’ Union representative Danny Miller said he was aware of claims the company had accused workers of harassment.

“We’re currently investigating that ourself; from what we understand, all it is is the company complained to people for standing outside their workplace watching other workers drive in,” Mr Miller said.

“No other action’s been taken. No remarks, no actions and therefore we’re saying we’re not breaking laws, but we’re going to respond to the company appropriately.”

Mr Miller said protesting workers had been civil throughout their campaign.

“Peacefully protesting. That’s all we’re doing,” he said.

The workers’ campaign will continue with a full week of strike action this week (Monday, March 20 to Friday, March 24).
