On April 14, City of Greater Shepparton Mayor Kim O’Keeffe announced she would seek pre-selection for The Nationals for the seat ahead of the November poll.
Cr O’Keeffe said she felt the time was right for “someone who will stand strong for our community as we recover from the pandemic”.
She said if she was selected as The Nationals’ candidate for Shepparton she would fight for for better outcomes in education, health, climate change, water security and housing.
“Shepparton deserves its fair share on infrastructure, with a commitment to the Shepparton bypass, continued investment in passenger rail and a new Shepparton sports stadium, to name a few.”
Earlier this month, Shepparton small business owner and Greater Shepparton Foundation chief executive Cheryl Hammer was announced as the Liberal candidate for Shepparton.
Ms Hammer contested the 2018 state election for the Liberals, getting 26.56 per cent of the primary vote, finishing with 44.70 per cent of the two-party preferred vote.
State Member for Shepparton Suzanna Sheed was re-elected with 55.3 per cent.
Ms Hammer said small business recovery after the COVID-19 pandemic, choice in education and better access to mental health services were her top priorities.
Major infrastructure projects in need of funding — such as the Shepparton bypass, stage two of the Goulburn Valley Health redevelopment and the Shepparton Sports Centre — project would be important state election platforms in 2022, she said.
Ms Sheed has not indicated publicly whether she intends to seek another term.
