The Beaconsfield resident purchased and restored an Australian Army 1964 International 4x4 MK3 Cargo Truck, of the type that served in the Vietnam Conflict.
Paul learned the story of the previous owner William "Billy" Baird OAM, late of Hay New South Wales, who was a war veteran. Upon retirement, Billy drove this iconic vehicle ‘Cargo’ for many years, delivering mail and supplies from Hay to Ivanhoe in what can only be described as appalling road conditions.
Inspired by the story of ‘Billy’ and ‘Cargo’, Paul decided he wanted to document the history in a way younger generations could understand and appreciate.
“The Adventures of Cargo the Army Truck” was born, with four books released in 2022.
The first book in the series, Cargo Gets a New Job! tells the story of how Cargo spent his life in the Australian army from 1964 when he was born to 1984 before he retired.
Speaking to the Free Press last week, Paul, who has been coming to the annual KVE Corowa Swim for many years said his first four books had been well received.
“I’m a grandfather of eleven and an active member of the Victorian Military Vehicle Corps (VMVC),” he said.
“I see firsthand how excited people of all ages get when they see these historic vehicles, both on the road and on display.
“These books are just some real stories, with a bit of history and a great message, nothing more. I want children to enjoy reading again. My grandkids have tested the books and they love them. That’s what it’s about.”
Paul said his passion for military vehicles came about after being engaged with the Australian Army, first as a school cadet and then as a young Private at Monash University Regiment.
“My hope is that The Adventures of Cargo the Army Truck will ignite the curiosity of a new generation of Australians.”
Eight more books are planned for the series. The first four books are available to purchase on Amazon.
