That was what Kimberley Chu and her partner, Ivan Chau, thought, and now they are proud parents of two cats, Milo and Toby.
Milo is a two-year-old black cat named after the chocolate drink while Toby is a four-month-old black and white cat named after the food brand Uncle Tobys.
Kimberley never owned cats when she was younger and there wasn’t a plan to get a cat.
Instead Milo, her first cat, came to her by chance as a stray.
“We got Milo first, last December. He was a stray cat and was wandering around the house. And we took him to the shelter and no-one claimed him so we adopted him,” Kimberley said.
Toby, on the other hand, was planned, as Kimberley felt Milo would be lonely with her and her partner out of the house during the day.
“We thought with Milo alone he might want some company,” she said.
Though cats can often be temperamental and territorial creatures who prefer a solitary lifestyle, nobody told Kimberley’s two pets.
Instead, the two cats enjoy each other’s company and can often be seen playing with each other.
“Toby likes chasing after Milo,” Kimberley said.
“They get along well, it is sort of a play-fight thing.”
Not only do the two cats love to play fight but they also love their screen time.
“They sleep and chill on the couch and they love watching movies, and if there is a cat involved they would run up to the screen and try and find it,” Kimberley said.
This love for company extends to humans, and the two have no problems when meeting other people.
“They are absolutely people-friendly,” Kimberley said.
“They would come over to visitors. Milo can be patted.”
In this, Milo is the braver of the two, with Toby needing to be called before he comes out to interact with strangers.
However, the differences with people ends there.
“He (Toby) is also friendly. If you get close and play with him he would love you so much,” Kimberley said.
A love of toys is another thing the two cats have in common.
For Toby, this comes in the form of a tennis ball he loves to chase — and good luck getting it back.
As for Milo, when it comes to toys he likes his a bit more fancy.
“Milo loves Nerf guns,” Kimberley said.
“He would chase after the bullets when they get fired.”
Like all animals, the two cats have their own idiosyncrasies.
In the case of Toby they involve stealing Milo’s food from his plate, with Milo looking passively on before moving and taking Toby’s food.
Toby also likes getting his paws on human food.
Milo, on the other hand, loves being taken for walks.
“Milo loves going for walks on a leash. I have an Instagram account for him,” Kimberley said.
Like all young children, Milo and Toby get up to mischief.
“When they are in the cat litter, they then get out and walk all over the place and leave footprints,” Kimberley said.
As for bath time, only bribery and a tolerance for getting scratched ensure the two cats are well groomed.
“Bath time is the worst,” Kimberley said.
Yet despite the bath-time battles it is clear Kimberley and her partner have fallen in love with their feline children, and both Milo and Toby have a forever home with them.
