It was when cyclists John Pyle and Greg Jones established a friendship that the group began to form.
In early 2005, they called on bike enthusiasts to join, and the club has been cycling around the Mitchell Shire and beyond ever since.
Mr Jones was the group’s first president. He designed its signature orange jersey, and has recently created a new blue and yellow design to celebrate the 20 years of MBUG.
On both jerseys is a representation of Mt Piper, a symbol of the group’s Mitchell Shire identity.
For the entire life of the group, Mr Pyle has served as secretary.
In that time, Mr Pyle has written MBUG’s weekly newsletter and acted as co-ordinator and planner of the group’s weekly rides.
In his own spare time, he has ridden thousands of kilometres for enjoyment, and has acted as Chief WARBY (We Are Right Behind You) for the Great Victorian Bike Ride.
MBUG president Pauline Duff said she was thankful for the support of members throughout the years.
“Many other members have contributed to the group in a variety of ways, and we give thanks to all those who have volunteered their help over the 20 years,” Ms Duff said.
“We continue to ride twice weekly, and join with the Friends of the Bendigo to Wallan Rail Trail and Wallan Environment Group to advocate for better cycling and walking infrastructure in Mitchell Shire.”
To celebrate 20 years, the group enjoyed a lunch at member Janis Baker’s property, located near the base of Mt Piper.
“It was a perfect day to reminisce about past activities and to recall the very few times in 20 years that the weather has turned against us,” Ms Duff said.
“The group has ventured to beautiful parts of Victoria to enjoy numerous rail trails, experienced cycling in New Zealand and the busy roads of Vietnam.
“We have ridden many kilometres, had the occasional fall, had great fun and made many friends.”
MBUG welcomes all interested cyclists, whether new or experienced, to join.
