A police spokesperson confirmed police and emergency services were called to the Hume Fwy, around three kilometres out of Violet Town, just after 5am this morning after reports of a collision involving a truck.
“It is believed a truck collided with a deer causing the truck to roll and come to rest in the centre median strip,” they said.
Following the collision cargo from the truck, which was believed to be carrying timber sleepers, was strewn across both lanes.
“A four wheel drive and another truck drove over the debris causing flat tyres and a punctured fuel tank,” the police spokesperson said.
“Both of these vehicles were towed from the scene.”
County Fire Authority district 22 rostered duty officer Leigh Allan said six CFA units attended the scene after reports of a petrol spillage and a possible fire in the vehicle.
Upon arrival he said CFA confirmed there was no fire and the driver was not trapped inside the vehicle.
“My understanding is that (the collision occurred) on a major highway with a lot of bystanders so they potentially helped the driver out onto scene,” Mr Allan said.
Ambulance Victoria confirmed the driver of the truck was treated at the scene for shoulder injuries.
He was taken to Northeast Health Wangaratta in a stable condition.
