Last Saturday, January 18 the time capsule, buried 25 years ago, was unearthed.
While the club regrettably couldn't invite the public to witness the unearthing due to strict safety protocols around the heavy machinery used, they're thrilled to now share this momentous occasion with the community.
On Sunday, January 26, Australia Day, at 12pm, the Rotary Club of Deniliquin will be handing out the envelopes from the time capsule that was buried 25 years prior.
Rotary Club members will distribute envelopes from the Rotary shelter to those who contributed, or to their families, ensuring each message finds its way home across generations.
Getting the chance to speak with Rotary member David McPherson, he let us know about how the uncovered capsule’s contents will be distributed.
“We will be handing out the envelopes on the day, they will be distributed by alphabetical order, hopefully helping the process.
“We have a roster of six or more Rotarian's that will be helping with the distribution,” David said.
“We do have more than 900 envelopes to distribute on the day, please be patient with us.
“Also, if people can’t make it, we will endeavour to locate that person and have the envelope sent to them.
Another topic that was raised throughout the community regarding distribution of the envelopes, would be what is to happen in the case of someone who has passed away since placing their envelope in the time capsule.
“In the unfortunate circumstance that a deceased person had placed a letter or envelope in the 2000 time capsule, a next of kin, or close family member may collect it,” David said.
The Rotary Club is distributing mementos from the past and offering a chance to be part of future history by selling envelopes for the next time capsule burial.
It is anticipated that the burial of the time capsule, to be unearthed in 2050, will be done in June.
