The upgrade is expected to deliver increased capacity for mobile services, which means more consistent speeds, smoother streaming and faster download times.
Additionally, it will help boost the area’s existing 4G performance.
Work on the base station is slated to begin on Monday, February 10, and continue until Friday, February 14.
Telstra customers may face challenges during this period, including disruptions or reduced mobile coverage, and the network will be completely offline from Wednesday, February 12, to Thursday, February 13.
Telstra regional general manager for Eastern Victoria Jenny Gray said the disruption was necessary but said the team would work to minimise inconveniences.
“We’ll only be switching off the site when we need to and will have it back online and working better than ever as quickly as possible,” she said.
“We know how important mobile connectivity is for Australians, whether you’re in the city or the country.”
Telstra mobile customers will receive text messages advising them of the upcoming works.
When experiencing disruptions, customers are encouraged to enable wi-fi calling, a free feature on most popular mobile phones that allows calls and texts to be sent and received over wi-fi.
Notably, landline services, NBN internet services and mobile coverage from other providers will not be impacted.
Local business owners are urged to speak to their bank about connecting their EFTPOS terminals to their NBN or wi-fi connection to avoid delays in processing transactions.
As Mount Major prepares for the future with 5G, residents are encouraged to be patient during this transition.
